Supporting Agencies Continuing Education

Eagle County Paramedic Services (ECPS) is a Colorado State Training Group.  As a State-approved training group, we provide many services to our supporting agencies.  These include assistance in State and National Registry certification, providing a process to allow outside agencies to assign approved continuing education (CE) hours for their own in-house CE, and providing many opportunities for employees to attend CE hosted by ECPS.

State and National EMT Certification

Part of the role of our training group is to assist EMTs and Paramedics in the State of Colorado with applying for State or National Registry certification.  This is a service that is provided to EMTs who work or volunteer for one of our affiliated agencies. In order to complete the certification process, a designated representative from the ECPS Training Group needs to sign the candidate’s application to verify skill competency and continuing education hour requirements have been met.  In addition, the ECPS Training Group representative needs to verify that the candidate has not been charged with a felony or had any disciplinary action within the past certification cycle.  Because of these requirements, ECPS can only sign for EMTs who are working or volunteering at an affiliated agency with a shared Medical Director.  In addition, ECPS can only approve applications for paramedics employed at ECPS due to more stringent standards for skill verification that cannot be completed for outside agencies.  The following agencies are affiliated with the ECPS Training Group:

Agencies Affiliated with Eagle County Paramedic Services Training Group

Eagle County Airport Fire and Rescue
Greater Eagle Fire Protection District
Gypsum Fire Protection District
Rock Creek Fire Protection District
Eagle River Fire Protection District
Vail Fire
Vail Ski Patrol
Beaver Creek Ski Patrol

Process for State of Colorado EMT Certification

1. Application Packet
Download EMT application from State website.  The State only has a paper application.
http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/CDPHE-EM/CBON/1251589439749
 2. CE Hours
If you do not have a current National Registry Card, you will need to complete the continuing education hour requirements.  If you do have a current NR EMT card, it will take the place of CE hours for certification.  EMTs are required to complete 36 hours of CE every three years.  No more than ½ of the total hours can be distributive (online).  Download the CE spreadsheet and fill it out.  If you have questions on how to fill it out, either contact your agency training representative, or send an email to the ECPS Training Group.  Once you have completed your CE worksheet, email it to the ECPS Training Group for review.

3. Skill Verification?
4. Signatures from Designated ECPS Training Group Representative
The final step for certification is to obtain a written signature for verification of skill competency and continuing education hours.  Once you have your completed application (which includes copies of your current CPR card and driver’s license) and have your CE worksheet COMPLETED, use the contact form below to set up a time to obtain necessary signatures.

Process for National Registry EMT Certification

1. Create a Login on National Registry Website
http://www.nremt.org/
2.  Affiliate with Eagle County Ambulance
After affiliating, email the ECPS Training Group to notify a representative that you have requested affiliation.
3. CE Hours
EMTs are required to complete 72 hours of CE every two years.  Download the CE spreadsheet and fill it out.  If you have questions on how to fill it out, either contact your agency training representative, or send an email to the ECPS Training Group.  Once you have completed your CE worksheet, email it to the ECPS Training Group for review.

  • Scroll down to bottom of page to submit.
4. Skill Verification?
5. Completing your Online Certification
Once you have received approval for your CE hours from an ECPS Training Group representative and have been affiliated with Eagle County Ambulance, you can go ahead and complete the online application.  Once it is complete, submit it and email the ECPS Training Group for notification of the submission.
  • Note – Once an applicant submits an application, it will go to the ECPS Training Group for approval.  Once the ECPS Training Group representative approves it, it will move to National Registry.
  • Note - Candidates for certification should be selecting EMT and not EMT-B in order to transition to the new provider levels.  Colorado scope of practice and education standards currently meet or exceed National Scope of Practice.  Applicants from an agency affiliated with the ECPS Training Group will have their transition verified electronically after the application is submitted.

Providing Continuing Education Credit for In-House Training

The ECPS Training Group encourages affiliated agencies to hold their own in-house continuing education (CE) and has provided a process that enables them to assign their own CE credit. Because it is required that State training groups have an established process for tracking own CE, affiliated agencies need to follow a few basic steps.
1. Prior to the course, download and complete the lesson plan for approval.
(PDF Download) – ECPS CE Lesson Plan
2. Download a Sign-In Sheet and complete it during the course.
(PDF Download) – ECPS Sign-In Sheet
3. After the course completion, they can email the completed lesson plan and sign in sheet to the ECPS Training Group. The training group will send CE cards in exchange. Once you have completed these steps please submit the Education Form and all relevant documents.

What is EMS?

Emergency Medical Services, more commonly known as EMS, is an essential public service. You can easily recognize EMS when you see ambulances and medical helicopters responding to incidents in our community, but EMS is much more than emergency medical response and transport. EMS is part of an intricate system of agencies and organizations; communications and transportation networks; trauma systems, as well as hospitals, trauma centers, and specialty care centers; rehabilitation facilities; and highly trained professionals —including volunteer and career prehospital personnel, physicians, nurses, therapists, administrators, government officials and an informed public that knows what to do in a medical emergency. Each player in the EMS system has an essential job to perform as part of a coordinated system of care.  —Adapted from NHTSA
